Dirt Dog and NRB Whirlwind
Connections and Patriotism

by: Lisa M. Pritchard February 26. 2026
Last week, Dirt Dog and I took our first flight together—this time to Nashville, Tennessee, for the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) Conference. We stayed at the magnificent Gaylord Opryland Resort, and it truly was breathtaking. The interior felt like a lush, indoor paradise: towering palms and vibrant plants everywhere, cascading fountains and waterfalls, winding pathways leading to charming shops and restaurants. It kept us constantly looking around, wondering what delightful surprise awaited around the next corner. During the day, sunlight (or soft clouds) filtered through the massive skylights overhead. At night, thousands of fairy lights twinkled across the atriums, creating a magical glow.
Our trip was a whirlwind—but remarkably smooth. No unexpected hiccups. Our flight departed and arrived on time. During the descent into Nashville, though, turbulence made the plane feel unsteady, and for a moment, I worried we might skid on landing. I closed my eyes and prayed, asking God to place His hand on our plane. When I opened them and glanced across the aisle, I saw my real-life friend and co-author, Jennifer, praying too. God answered—He held us safely in the palm of His hand, and we touched down without incident.
Our Uber arrived promptly, check-in was seamless, and the only real challenge was navigating the hotel’s vast layout. (I’m notoriously geographically challenged!) Next time, I’ll trust Dirt Dog to lead the way. We unpacked quickly and headed straight to the convention center.
Wallflower Prepares
As an introvert and self-described wallflower, I braced myself for awkward small talk and hiding in corners. If I know you, I could talk your ear off—but strangers? Not so much. I was pleasantly surprised. Approaching exhibitors and attendees felt natural and easy. We all shared the same purpose: serving God and expanding His kingdom. That common bond made everyone feel like family. Connections came effortlessly, and I was grateful I’d chosen comfortable clothes and shoes—I walked miles!
In the weeks leading up to the conference, I’d been surviving on 3–4 hours of sleep per night, obsessing over updated materials, promotional items, pitches, and talking points. I’d lie in bed, eyes wide open, thinking, Why waste time lying here when I could be preparing? The exhaustion was real, but it paid off.
Another First and Another

I met several people I’d only known through Zoom or phone calls, including fellow authors from AWSA and Abundance Books. I loved spending time in both booths. The highlight? Walking up to the Abundance display and seeing Dirt Dog Invites Prissy Poodle to the Prom proudly placed on the top shelf. My heart overflowed—my book, on display for the very first time!
Even sweeter: I made my first in-person sale there. A lovely young mom named Casey bought it for her four children. Later, a couple of other attendees tracked me down to say they’d purchased copies too. Thank You, Lord—may these stories touch young hearts for You. A kind gentleman named Jeff, an award-winning author himself, bought a copy and sought me out so I could sign it. Those moments were pure joy.
Making Connections
Jennifer and I enjoyed wonderful conversations at various booths, but the most meaningful connections often happened unexpectedly—God’s divine appointments were the best part.
My absolute favorite moment came at the NRB Freedom 250 Celebration (honoring America’s upcoming 250th anniversary). Patriotism filled the ballroom like fireworks igniting in my soul. Each attendee received a small American flag, and we waved them with fierce pride—red, white, and blue fluttering everywhere.
We watched a stirring color guard presentation, heard from an outstanding octet from Liberty University, and listened to inspiring speakers. But the highlight was the Honorable Pete Hegseth. This warrior stepped onto the stage, openly declared himself a sinner saved by grace through the blood of Jesus, and delivered a powerful, faith-filled message. The room erupted—we stood, clapped, waved our flags, and cheered nearly every word.
We left home at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and returned Friday around 2 p.m.—a total of about 54 hours away. Roughly twelve hours went to travel (airports, flights, waiting), another twelve to fourteen to sleep (or lie in bed quietly), a few for meals and getting ready, leaving perhaps twenty hours for the conference and events. Every minute was worth it. Even if the only thing we’d done was attend that America 250 celebration, the trip would have been worthwhile.
Recovery
When I got home Friday afternoon, I dropped my bags in the hallway, hugged my husband, and headed straight to my room. I drew the curtains, piled up the pillows, and collapsed into bed. Aside from bathroom breaks and meals, I stayed there for the next two and a half days, recharging. Months of minimal sleep and intense focus had left me utterly spent. But praise God—I’m back, my batteries are powered up! I’m nearly caught up on everything, and I’m excited to throw a launch party for Dirt Dog this Monday!
When I committed to God over two years ago to write for Him, I thought it would simply mean putting words on a page. How wrong I was. It’s so much more—involved, demanding, and rewarding than I ever imagined. And I wouldn’t change a thing; well not much.
I’m deeply grateful for the lessons, the growth, and the incredible people I’m meeting along the way. On many days, God miraculously multiplies my time and energy, fueling me to press on. I can only thank Him for allowing me to serve in this way. Thank You, Lord, for making my first-grade dream come true.
What an unforgettable trip—full of His faithfulness, new friendships, and renewed purpose. Onward!
January: A Busy Month
Sadly, it’s time to take down the Christmas decorations. Even worse, the burden of eating healthy, and less, is “on my plate”, so to speak–or is it off? Ha! Add that to writing pitches for an upcoming conference (NRB), releases, blogs, social media posts, query letters, a newsletter, one-sheets, media kits, preparations for author events,…
